How the VoltaWell™ Journey Into Human Hydration Began

My journey didn’t start in wellness or hydration.

It started in my garden.


About fifteen years ago, my wife Angela and I were planning our move back to the Daytona Beach area. By 2014, we found the spot—an acre and a half, close in, just enough land to put what I had been studying into the ground. The first thing I did wasn’t change the home; it was to get the garden in the ground. I prepared the soil; it was time to put my gardening research and planning into action.

I love growing food. Hands in the dirt. Planting a seed and watching it go straight from the ground to the kitchen. Zero food miles. Zero storage time. Zero excuses for nutrient loss. Gardening forces you to pay attention to how nature actually works, not how we wish it worked.

Like most gardeners, I started where everyone starts: soil, compost, nutrients. I read, experimented, and adjusted. But over time, something became impossible to ignore.

Water mattered more than I thought.
Not just how much, but how plants actually use it.

I was trying to increase production out of about 3,000 square feet of organic raised beds. When hydration finally came into balance, everything changed. Production didn’t just improve—it exploded. For five years straight, I planted less and harvested more. It got to the point where Angela kept saying, “Please stop growing so much,” because she was the one preserving it all.

The plants themselves were different. Thicker leaves. Stronger stems. Deeper color. Better taste. Bigger yields. The onions were enormous. I didn’t need lab assays to know something fundamental had shifted; the plants were simply more viable.

What surprised me most was what disappeared.

Fewer pests. Less disease. Less leaf damage. I needed fewer inputs to manage problems that used to be routine.

My takeaway was simple: healthier, less-stressed systems don’t attract breakdown. In nature, stress appears first, and stress gets selected for removal.

After watching this pattern repeat year after year, a question finally hit me.

What about me?

If hydration and mineral balance could change plant biology that dramatically, what was it doing—or not doing—in the human body?

That question sent me down the rabbit hole. I read papers. Watched lectures. Dug through physiology, biochemistry, and clinical research. I joke that I read the internet twice, but it’s not far off. I wasn’t trying to build a product. I wasn’t trying to start a company. I just wanted the truth. I wanted to be as healthy as possible.

So I started blending my own formulas at home.

Sixteen ingredients. Powders everywhere. An egg beater that probably should’ve been retired. Small batches for myself, Angela, family, and friends. Nothing commercial. Just testing, refining, adjusting—again and again.

Before I ever sold anything, I tested it on myself.

And that’s when hydration stopped being theoretical. My own hydration metrics moved exactly the way physiology says they should when things are done right. Not hype. Not feelings. Measurable change.

Eventually, Angela had had enough of the kitchen chemistry. Our house is open, and fine powders don’t respect boundaries. One day she said, “Just go buy one. I don’t care what it costs.”

So I went shopping.

What I found was eye-opening.

At the time, there were over seventy electrolyte brands. Today, there are more than a hundred. Different labels. Different flavors. Same story. Sodium bombs. Potassium extremes. Shortcut formulas wrapped in marketing language that made me stop and think, Why are you even selling this?

That’s when the old hat-maker story snapped into focus.

In the 1800s, hat makers treated felt with mercury. It made beautiful hats—and slowly poisoned everyone involved. “Mad as a hatter” wasn’t folklore; it was chemistry. Imagine a convention full of hat makers, all arguing over style, price, and branding… while every hat contains mercury.

That’s what I was seeing.

After reviewing more than a hundred brands, the pattern is unmistakable. Same hype. Same promises. Same shallow understanding of hydration, focused almost entirely on how much you drink, not where the water actually goes.

That misunderstanding shows up everywhere.

Many people have been taught that electrolytes are only needed during intense exercise or visible sweating—as if hydration is just about replacing what drips out of you. That logic misses the real problem entirely.

Sweating replaces loss.
It does not fix cellular dehydration.

You can be well-hydrated by volume and still have dehydrated cells. You can drink plenty of water, even use sports drinks, and never meaningfully change intracellular hydration. Most electrolyte products are designed for short-term performance or acute loss—not for restoring the body’s deeper water balance.

That’s the mercury in the hats.

Everyone is arguing about flavors, sodium levels, and branding, while the underlying assumption is wrong. Hydration isn’t a workout accessory. It’s a foundational biological process that operates every minute of every day—whether you’re sweating or sitting still.

I’m not interested in that model.

I’m on a mission to fix dehydration at the level where it actually operates. To move past assumptions. To replace guesswork with measurement. To focus on intracellular function, mineral balance, and the physics of water in the body—not just flavor packets and marketing slogans.

If I do that part right—if I stay disciplined, honest, and grounded in how the human system actually works—the rest takes care of itself. The brand. The business. The money.

That’s not the goal.
